I’ve been thinking about how our physical bodies affect our work as artists. Our bodies and senses change as we age. How does this affect our work?

This is an interesting article from the NY Times about how Monet’s cataracts affected his late-life paintings. Since he couldn’t see well, he relied on memory more and this affected how the paintings look.

Renoir had crippling arthritis in his hands. Matisse took to paper cutting when he could no longer paint. Beethoven cut the legs off his pianos so he could feel the vibrations of his playing through the floor.

As artists we think often about how our life experiences and learning affect our work. It’s worth thinking about our bodies too. Do you deal with physical challenges that affect your work?
